His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios assigned
Reverend Dr. Philip Zymaris to our beloved Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church as of January 15, 2009.
A brief biography of Reverend Dr. Philip Zymaris
Fr. Philip, originally from New York, is a graduate of Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. While at Holy Cross, he had the opportunity to travel to Kenya and Uganda in the summer of 1987 to aid in missionary work. Upon graduating, he went to Thessaloniki, Greece to work on his Th. D in Dogmatic Theology, which was defended in the year 2000. While in Greece he met Xanthippi Kotzageorgi, a Historian from Thessaloniki and they married in 1995. During this period, Fr. Philip was ordained to the diaconate in 1996 and to the priesthood 1998 by Metropolitan Panteleimon Rodopoulos, Patriarchal representative and Abbot of Moni Vlatadon Church in Thessaloniki.
From the time of his ordination until his return to the United States in 2005, Fr. Philip served at the Moni Vlatadon Church, which is affiliated with the Patriarchal Institute for Patristic Studies. Along with his liturgical and pastoral duties, Fr. Philip was involved in organizing the yearly international theological conferences held at the Patriarchal Institute in the context of the “Demetria” celebrations held in Thessaloniki every October. He also participated in catechizing and baptizing adults from the Thessaloniki area who were interested in entering the Orthodox Church and served Parishes in the Metropolis of Edessa. During this period Fr. Philip and Presbytera Xanthippi (Xenia for short) are proud parents of five children, all born in Greece.
In 2005, after 14 years in Greece, Fr. Philip joined the faculty at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology as Professor of Liturgics. Fr. Philip and Presbytera Xenia love reading (literature and history especially), music and traveling with their young children, Kleanthis, Christine, Panagiotis, Angelo and Demetra.
